How is it that today was my homeland's historic independence day and I had no idea?
At least, not until I checked my email this evening and found that my homepage was decked out in red, white and blue--complete with little American flags--instead of the customary purple. Is today some sort of patriotic holiday that I wasn't aware of? I wondered. They only change my page for the really important ones, so what am I missing here? Then I looked at the date at the top of the screen. July 4th. I hadn't even registered it was July, as I was used to referring to this month as shichigatsu, (literally "7th month"). When this month started, it didn't even register with me that the 4th would soon be approaching.
My Okaasan was working tonight, so the rest of the family ate out (an occurrence too frequent to be coincidental). I celebrated this great day in history by ordering good old-fashioned American food, (though possibly less out of respect for our forbearers and more because I knew it would be tasty). Once I had eaten my way into a happy pork-steak-and-potatoes-induced haze, downed myself in numerous cups of tea, and returned home, I curled up in my bed and watched She's the Man on my laptop, despite the utter stupidity and childishness of the aforementioned movie. I was supposed to be celebrating America, after all.
